What is an IEC?

An Import Export Code (IEC) is a 10-digit unique identifier issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Ministry of Commerce, Government of India. It is mandatory for every business or individual engaged in importing goods into India or exporting goods out of India. No customs clearance can happen without a valid IEC — it is checked at every port of entry and exit.

IEC is also required to receive foreign currency payments through banking channels for exports, apply for export benefits under schemes like RoDTEP, SEIS, and EPCG, and register on government export portals and platforms. For service exporters (e.g., software, consulting), IEC is required when receiving foreign remittances.

The IEC is permanent — once issued, it does not expire or require renewal. However, IEC holders must update their details (address, bank account, etc.) on the DGFT portal annually. VITTAX completes IEC registration within 1–2 working days of document submission.

⚠️ No customs clearance can happen without a valid IEC — it is checked at every port of entry and exit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is IEC required for export of services (software, consulting)?

Yes — service exporters receiving foreign currency remittances above a threshold must have IEC to receive payment through banking channels and to file LUT (Letter of Undertaking) for zero-rated GST on exports.

Can an individual (not a business) get IEC?

Yes — individuals can apply for IEC using their personal PAN and bank account. This is useful for freelancers and individual exporters.
